How we work

As a not-for-profit we endeavour to facilitate the process of development that is necessary to produce high quality, accessible literature while prioritising author experience over income. Other self-publishing companies and independent publishers either take a fee from the authors up front, or retain the rights to the final work in order to take profit from all sales. In contrast, Ensemble does not charge a fee, and instead helps connect authors with reliable service providers who share our values. We oversee fairly priced and fairly paid contracts that ensure clear expectations and realistic outcomes.

We then take on the cost of publication and promotion, and any income from sales are then divided equally between the author and Ensemble until all costs have been recouped. The writer retains ownership of their work, and rather than being paid only a royalty of the profits, the rest being kept by the publisher, instead the writer pays a pre-agreed commission to the publisher from their own profits.
